Management Style
In the beginning of the class, I realized that my management style is very organized. I like things to run on time. My first set of management plans, for the vegan meal, I had everything down to a specific time. I had color coordinated schedules for each worker for when they were supposed to be doing whatever they were doing. When things got off of schedule, I would get slightly frustrated and would push my workers to catch up. After finishing this meal, and working in other kitchens, I started to adapt my management style to become slightly more relaxed.
For my second meal, the elementary school lunch, I still had specific tasks for my workers, but I became more flexible. I also realized that if something needs to get done on time, help is necessary from the entire kitchen, from workers to managers. Teamwork is vital and works well with my management style. After adapting, I have realized that although structure is necessary, it is also nice to have room to be flexible, allowing for emergencies and making sure that working as a team is highlighted.
I have learned more from my other classmates than I thought possible. It is great getting to work with a variety of people that handle situations in different ways. Through watching them enact their management styles, while letting myself be managed, I was able to see what styles of management I liked, or at least parts, as well as parts that I did not agree with. It was interesting to see how we all handle management in a unique way. People can benefit from working from different management styles. Another important thing that I realized as a manager, is the manager's role. A manager is made to be there for an employee, helping them in whatever context needed, not just an authority figure giving out directions.
Overall, I believe that each person should be given a task, including managers. As a manager, I have a vision and I will take steps to enact that vision, but I also love hearing from others and I am willing to adapt if his or her ideas are better than mine. I will do everything in my power to help out those that are working for me, answering any questions and being willing to do any small task for whatever he or she might need. I am excited to continue to develop my management style, as well as getting the opportunity to learn and build off of those who I will be working with.
